Frequently Asked Questions
Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces. It is used to treat conditions such as indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and stomach ulcers.
Lansoprazole should be taken at least 30 minutes before food, ideally in the morning. Swallow the capsules whole with water. If you have trouble swallowing the capsules, we may suggest dispersing them in water.
To get the most from Lansoprazole, avoid trigger foods that worsen acid reflux. This is foods such as tomatoes, chocolate, alcohol, spicy foods, citrus fruits, peppermint, and caffeinated drinks. Eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding rich or fatty foods can also help.
Common side effects include headaches, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, wind, dry mouth, and skin rash. These side effects are usually mild and tend to resolve on their own.
Lansoprazole can interact with certain medications, including digoxin, antifungal drugs, methotrexate, HIV medications, phenytoin, and blood thinners like clopidogrel and warfarin. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking.
You should start to feel relief from symptoms within 2 to 3 days, but it may take up to 4 weeks for Lansoprazole to work fully. If you don’t see improvement or if symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
