Mometasone Nasal Spray - Hayfever Treatment

Mometasone nasal (nose) spray is used to treat cold-like symptoms caused by allergic rhinitis. This is inflammation of the inside of the nose that can be brought on by hay fever. Mometasone is also used to treat other conditions, such as nasal polyps in adults. It is a type of medicine known as a steroid (or corticosteroid). Corticosteroids are a copy of a hormone that your body makes naturally. They are not the same as anabolic steroids.

What is Mometasone Nasal Spray used for?

Mometasone nasal spray is used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial rhinitis, which include nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny or itchy nose. It is also used for the treatment of nasal polyps, which are painless growths inside the nose.

How should I use Mometasone Nasal Spray?

For allergic rhinitis, the usual dose for adults is 1-2 sprays in each nostril once a day. For nasal polyps, the dose may be increased to twice a day if needed. Always follow the specific instructions provided with your medication or as directed by your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget to use the spray, use it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one. Setting a reminder can help you remember to use it regularly.

Mometasone nasal spray needs to be used regularly for it to work. For allergic rhinitis the usual dose is 1 or 2 sprays into each nostril once a day. Do not use more than 2 sprays per nostril in 24 hours.

The active substance is mometasone furoate. Each spray contains 50 micrograms of mometasone furoate, as the monohydrate. The other ingredients are dispersible cellulose, glycerol, sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate, polysorbate 80, benzalkonium chloride, purified water.

Like all medicines, mometasone can cause side effects although not everyone gets them. With mometasone nasal spray, very little medicine is absorbed into the rest of your body, so it's not likely to give you serious side effects. Common side effects:

Serious side effects Very few people have serious side effects when using mometasone nasal spray. You are more likely to have a serious side effect if you use high doses of mometasone for more than a few months. Tell a healthcare professional straight away if you have a serious side effect, including:

• - problems with your breathing
• - damage to your nose or sores inside your nose
• - changes in your eyesight, such as blurred vision or a cloudy lens in the eye – these can be signs of increased pressure in your eyes (glaucoma) or a cataract

Serious allergic reaction

• - It's rare but possible to have a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to mometasone.
